Document Summary

Lecture 4; metabolism metabolites, catabolic reactions and anabolic. Metabolism- chemical reactions which occur within the cell. Catabolic reactions- reaction in which a larger molecules into a smaller molecule. Anabolic reactions- reaction in which smaller molecules form larger molecules. A multistep enzyme pathway releases energy in small amounts, so that each packet of energy can be used by the cell. Flow of material depends on; supply of susbstrates, removal of products, enzyme activities. Feedback inhibition; product of a pathway activates an enzyme further down the pathway. Feedforward activation; metaolite early in the pathway activates an enzyme further down the pathway. Other rapid control mechanisms; enzyme activity can be rapidly and reversibly altered by covalent modification of an enzyme. Protein phosphatases remove phosphate groups that have been previously added by kinases. Relationship between thermodynamics and metabolism is governed by; -free energy change ( g)- increase of chemical energy for a reaction g= h-
