Document Summary

Biol112 - lecture #8 - thermodynamics and membrane formation. From reactant being more motionally free, stronger and more bond the product being less motionally free, weaker and fewer bonds. The h increases as the reactants go from a position of stability to less stability. The s increases as the reactants go from more motional freedom to less motional freedom. So the correct answer is that it is sometimes spontaneous, depends on temperature. Can"t be sure if h is bigger than s so it is reliant on temperature. What is the main reason that a lipid bilayer forms? (using thermodynamics) Increase bonding between waters (before they were crowded around the lipids) Decrease in bonding between lipids and water (more lipids are together in membrane, less bonding with water) So g is a huge negative because of the increase in motional freedom of water. Spontaneous reaction so g has to be negative.
