Now, images have to work together with sound to provide meanings. Sound is controversial. (ex: singing in the rain, sunset boulevard ) Dialogue (text & subtext): words spoken by the characters. Subtext: what we interpret it to mean (ex: interpreting something to be ironic, but it"s not exactly what the character says) Music: original soundtrack or music the character listens to in the movie. Dimensions of film sound (all in regards to dialogue, music, and sound effects) Rhythm: beat or pace of the sound in relation to each other. Fidelity (=faithfulness): the relationship between a recorded sound and our conception of its source (ex: does the train whistle sound like a train whistle?) [audio-visual relationship: the sound we hear and the image we see] (ex: voice-over flashback - narrative?) Dialogue [what affects how we interpret the meaning of what is spoken and the character] Volume: the loudness of whatever is spoken. Specific characteristics of speech: the accent, dialect, diction.
