Hist 103 - world history since 1900 - lecture 8: russia in war and revolution; 1914 - Briefly discussed the book 14-18: understanding the great war, the book discussed the following themes. It has been popular since 1980s to celebrate compassion shown by soldiers during the war (opposing sides playing football match, etc. ) Soldiers are the victims of war, as advertised. The society is not aware that soldiers, in fact, are also agents of the war. In world war two, the casualty with civilians is much greater than that in world war one. In western front, the soldier death/ day in wwi was greater than soldier death/day in wwii. In russia, violence was much more intense in wwii. Soldier death/ day was 5 times than in wwi. Wwi resulted in an emergence of a new big power. The construction of the soviet union set a model for other communist systems. After toils of wwi, communism symboled something new and better.
