Document Summary

Mh: since enzymes are the drug targets discussed in this course, we will learn what their functions are on a molecular level. How are they selective for specific substrates: despite the fact that enzymes speed up chemical reactions, their abilities are governed by rate constants. We will describe these rate constants so that we may become familiar with them conceptually (description of a rate curve) and practically (observed changes in apparent rates upon enzyme inhibition). Enzyme = in yeast in greek, some dude studying fermentation noticed that something in yeat appeared to cause chemical catalysis. Catalysis substance that accelerate the rate or ease of a chemical rxn w/o itself being changed or consumed in the end. Gibb"s free energy (g): the energy portion of a thermodynamic system available to do work. Enzymes do not affect the equilibrium, it affects the rate at which equilibrium is reached.
