Royal proclamation- only crown could take land -> settlers had to buy from. Pre confederation (confederation 1867) treaties signed around lake ontario. After confederation canadian government signed treaties with indigenous people across canada (ontario and prairies) -> numbered treaties. Not all canada was taken by treaty, especially in bc. Indigenous people have constitutional set of rights, different set than everyone else. 1987- royal proclamation is constitution act: unwritten constitution. Like canada, britain doesn"t have a constitution. Convention is not law: written constitution. Established a set of roles to distinguish between federal and provincial powers.
