Amnesia: retrograde able to remember information from before injury impaired, anterograde able to form new memories after the injury impaired, usually able to learn new skills implicitly, affects explicit memory (implicit is often retained, h. m. Dementia: general term (encompasses a large range of disorders, refers to a loss of memory and other mental abilities that interfere with daily life, affects 14. 9% of canadians 65+ Alzheimer"s disease: 60-80% of cases of dementia, progressive starts with minor symptoms then deteriorates (quickly/slowly, symptoms, difficulty remembering names and recent events, apathy and depression, impaired judgement, disorientation, confusion, behaviour changes, difficulty speaking, walking, and swallowing. Changes in the brain: shrinkage, plaques clusters of protein fragments, tangles proteins which aren"t necessary for axon growth aren"t properly regulated. Cognitive changes are noticeable, but don"t interfere with life/independence. Some progress to dementia, some do not, and some get better. Not all present with memory as an early symptom.
