Document Summary
Not good at judging our own behavior (we are easily fooled) Our brains are constantly looking for patterns in the world. Mental shortcuts judge probability of an event by how similar it is to some prototype judgments based off of what first comes to mind (estimate likelihood: simplifying reality, normally very helpful. Representativeness heuristic: (cid:498)like goes with like(cid:499, (cid:498)off the top of my head (cid:499) Quantitative (most of the research: numeric quantities, variables, then data. Goals of scientific research: measurement and description (accuracy, understanding and prediction (why, application and control (apply what we know) What is a variable: any measureable charactristics, conditions, events, beahviours etc. that are controlled or measured by a study. Tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. What is a theory? (broad explanations: system of ideas, backed by evidence, used to explain something, difference between casual use of (cid:498)theory(cid:499) and scientific use, must be testable.
