Document Summary
Taste and smell guide feeding and social interactions. Combo of taste, smell, and mouth feel that leads to the overall rep for a particular food. Mucous memb at top of nasal cavity. Contained 10 mill olfactory receptor neurons (orns) Odorant molecules dissolve in mucous secreted by olfactory epithelium and bind odorant receptors. Binding of odorant receptors --> causes olfactory receptor neurons to fire aps --> travel thru to cribriform plate --> olfactory bulb. Brain struct located above the nasal cavity beneath the frontal lobes. Each glomerulus is innervated by neurons expressing a specific receptor. Each glomerulus reps a func unit for olfactory perception. 350 orn types, but can discriminate btw 10,000 diff odorants. Unique combo of active glomeruli for each odorant. Odor id retrieved from memory, triggers emotional response. When prime someone to smell something, you will have a reaction. Biochemical odorants emitted by other members of its species that can affect the animals behaviour or physiology.
