Document Summary

Psyc101 - lecture #6 - evolution, heredity, behaviour. But we don"t know everything about the brain. Englishmen- artificial selection of pigeons, breed for shows. Wild rock (ancestor pigeon)- blue grizzle frillback, english pater, indian fantail. Farmers- selectively bred dogs to kill gophers. Traits and characteristics is inherited from ancestors/parents. Natural selection- survival of the fittest (most successful in competition for resources) Evolution is gradual and continuous in slow changing environments. More rapid when they are sudden environmental changes. Ie global warming- causes speciation, those better adapted to new conditions are the only ones that survive. All organisms descended from an original and common ancestor. Natural selection maintains status quo under stable conditions. Selection- beneficial or detrimental to survival and reproductive success. Retention- good genes are carried on to the next generation. Variation- differences among members of the same species. Genotype- genetic makeup, not a specific endpoint (mixes with phenotype) Within or between species (intraspecific or interspecific)
