Symptoms not due to drug use or medical condition (before 2013, death of loved one disqualified depression diagnosis) Lifetime risk: 10-25% for women & 5-12% for men. Unrelated to ethnicity, education, income, or marital status. Those who have one episode at increased risk for another. Persistent depression disorder: lasts two years or more. Mania: episode of hyperactive, over optimistic state. Distinct period of abnormally & persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood (at least 1 week) Symptoms not due to drug use or general medical condition. No differences based on gender, age, race, ethnicity. Depression is unconscious self-punishment stemming from feeling abandoned. Depression stems from negative mental models of the self, world & future. I"ll never be good at anything because everyone hates me". Tendency to attribute negative events to internal, stable, and global factors. Uncontrollable bad events -> perceived lack of control -> generalized behaviour.
