Unconscious: the part of our mind containing thoughts, wishes, feelings and memories of which we are not aware. Eg#1) lost feeling in one"s hand might be caused by a fear of touching one"s genitals. Eg#2) unexplained blindness or deafness might be caused by not wanting to see or hear something that aroused intense anxiety. Free association: in psychoanalysis, a method of exploring the unconscious in which the person relaxes and says whatever comes to mind, no matter how trivial or embarrassing. He believed that the painful unconscious memories often from childhood, could be retrieved and released by free association.
