Document Summary
Problems with one"s identity or sense of self. A person"s enduring pattern of behaviour must be pervasive and inflexible as well as stable and of long duration. Must cause clinically significant distress or impairment of functioning and be manifested in atleast two of the following areas. Behaviours affect those close to the person - exhausting, unpredictable. Do not stem from reactions to stress in recent past. Stem largely from gradual development of behavioural patterns that result in persistently maladaptive ways of perceiving, thinking, and relating to the world. People often seem odd or eccentric with unusual behaviour ranging from distrust and suspicious to social detachment. Includes histrionic, narcissitic, antisocial, and borderline personality disorders. Show a tendency to be dramatic, emotional and erratic. Includes avoidant, dependent and obsessive compulsive personality disorders. In contrast to other groups, often show anxiety and fearfulness. Five factor model has been developed to help with this.
