PSYC 300 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Mentalization, Avoidant Personality Disorder, Novelty Seeking
Document Summary
Two features chronic interpersonal difficulties + problems with identity of self. Has to be long enduring inflexible pattern of behaviour + clinically significant distress. Do not stem from reactions to stress, may set the stage, but not cause. Gradual development of inflexible and distorted personality result in maladaptive way of perceiving, thinking, and relating to the world. Prevalence hard to get because of problematic diagnostic criteria. But probably 10% 5. 6% in a, 1. 5% in b, 6% in c. Comorbidity anxiety disorders, mood disorders, substance use problems, sexual deviations. Problematic diagnostic criteria hard to follow and not clean cut; inferred traits or consistent pattern of behaviour, not objective behavioural standards (panic attack) Five-factor model five basic personality traits and sub-traits of them. Different score patterns on different sub-traits can correspond to pathological extremes. Negative affectivity (neuroticism), detachment (extreme introversion), antagonism (extremely low agreeableness), disinhibition (extremely low conscientiousness) High level of comorbidity cannot isolate causes. Only research done are retrospective unreliable.
