PSYC 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Endarterectomy, Cerebral Circulation, Alcohol By Volume
Document Summary
Collateral and systemic circulation: flow may be complicated by other health issues, blood pressure and cerebral blood flow (cbf) Something is clogged body raises blood pressure to try and unblock something/to. Serological factors compensate for a loss: blood sugar, calcium, blood alcohol level. The obstruction: dislodging of embolism, subsequent obstructions. Sometimes these obstructions dislodge themselves, but then keep going and get stuck. Microcirculatory bed somewhere else downstream: perfusion of smaller arteries. It takes longer in smaller arteries: link to hypertension and diabetes. Critical to use proximal to stroke (the sooner the better: anticoagulants, carotid endarterectomy (surgery) Artery can be slowly, over time, clamped shut (period of hours) Cut artery open and scoop out the plaque and carefully repair the artery. Hemorrhage: use ct scan to make sure it is not a stroke, clips or coils. Put in coils that damn up the arteries and block the bleed: evacuation of hematoma.
