PSYC 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Malala Yousafzai, Conscientiousness, Extraversion And Introversion
Document Summary
High neuroticism, low extraversion, low agreeableness, low conscientiousness, and low openness have each been associated with less effective coping. People high in neuroticism tend to engage in a greater variety of unsuccessful strategies over time. Coping was once seen from a style perspective. It is now understood that coping varies according to both individual and situational factors. Coping can change, personality is harder to change: hardiness ( hardy personality ): Kobasa and maddi (1977) identified 3 main characteristics important in protecting people from negative effects of stress: control perceive control, internal locus, commitment involved in life, sense of purpose, challenge appraise events as challenges. Control: believes she has the power to change things. Personality & health behaviors: health & illness behaviour models underscore the role of personality in health and illness-related behaviours. Conscientiousness - associated with engaging in more healthy behaviors, fewer unhealthy or harmful behaviors.
