PSYC 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Extraversion And Introversion, Neuroticism, Conscientiousness
Document Summary
What is coping: coping is the behavioural response of the individual, technically, efforts to manage both internal and external demands of a situation; whether successful or not. No need to draw any of these models. Also, keep in mind the main function of personality in these models. *some people are likely to face more conflicts because of their personality. Personality & stress appraisal: personality can affect how potentially stressful events are appraised (as well as degree of threat perceived), neuroticism more likely to perceive events as stressful/severe, appraise events as threats; greater stress reactivity. Personality & coping: personality is associated with coping strategies over time, neuroticism less effective strategies (e. g. , problem solving); more passive and emotion-focused (e. g. , self-blame); confrontation/withdrawal. Extraversion more problem-solving; fewer maladaptive strategies; more support-seeking; more positive thinking/reappraisal: agreeableness more likely to engage/protect relationships, seek support; less confrontation; more forgiveness, positive reappraisal.
