Con"t from week 3-1 the nature of culture. Challenge with big group sizes -> learning how to play hockey from a big group vs. and individual. Prestige bias: attending more to models who are better respected and garner more people"s attention. How humans are so good at cultural learning - skews our ideas in being the most intelligent species. [video] chimps have a better working memory in comparison to humans. Emulative learning -> brain too massive to sustain, too inef cient. We end up in a norm of social learning. Social learning -> group size -> brain size. Allows for an easier time of engage in, a cycle between these two factors which form the cultural brain hypothesis which is a more sophisticated/comprehensive frame work. Group size: theory of mind, imitative learning. Brian size: maintain large brains, cultural complexity. Loss of muscle - less intestinal length required for nutrients, energy diverted to our brains to keep it going.
