Question: are there similarities/differences across ses for language and vocabulary at 18-24 months. How well they are able to process language. Method: tested infants from 2 different sites: one with higher ses families, one with lower/middle ses families. Measures ses using hollingshead index: looking-while-listening procedure, vocabulary checklist. Results: ses was correlated with vocabulary size. General strong correlation higher ses understand and use more words. Accuracy higher ses tend to be more accurate. Processing speed- how fast it took to look at the right picture high ses looked at the right picture faster: ses was correlated with accuracy and speed in language processing. High ses 18 mos are performing the same as low ses 24 mos. Suggests that ses is causing a 6 month gap: differences in vocabulary according to ses became more pronounced with age. In 18 months theres a different related to ses but. Difference gets bigger by 24 months: accuracy/speed in language processing were related to vocabulary size.
