PSYC1023 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Lewis Terman, Standardized Test, Intelligence Quotient
Document Summary
Psychology tests include: mental ability, achievement (school) and personality tests (introvert vs extrovert) Standardised test (iq test): everyone has the same time to write it, the same questions, same room. Percentile scores shows how well a student has done in comparison to the rest of the students taking the standardised test. A good test is reliable and valid, these are expressed statistically. Reliability gives consistent scores (test gives accurate answer every time) Validity is the tests ability to measure what it was designed to measure. Measuring ahead is reliable as it will always be the same, however it is not valid. Sir francis galton wrote the book called hereditary genius in 1869. He emphasised geniuses are inherited through genes. The work was largely unsuccessful but lead to the natures verses nurture debate. In 1904, alfred binet chaired a special commission in france. The special commission changed a policy in the government to put all children into school, it was mandatory.
