JUST 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Angiogenesis, Bronchus, Palpation
Document Summary
Today"s agenda: fundamentals, training adaptations, exercise prescription, lab instructions. Cardiorespiratory system: 02 pathway from atmosphere to capillary exchange: Carries oxygen to muscles/other tissues: myoglobin. Fast twitch vs. slow twitch muscle fibres. Energy systems and exercise: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic is exercise in the presence of oxygen. Anaerobic is exercise without the presence of oxygen. Fast and explosive = not enough time for oxygen to be transported to desired muscles. In short, oxygen is needed to make atp (adenosine triphosphate) energy. We can make some atp without oxygen but not nearly enough. Long and confusing process but most of the action occurs in the mitochondria (power plant of the cell) The amount of oxygen that your body removes from blood stream and uses to create energy. Amount of oxygen in arteries minus the amount in the veins. Age after 25 you decrease 1% /year. Gender - men have a 15-30% increase. Increased mitochondria production, increased capillary density in muscles.
