A working knowledge of deviance is essential. Today, notion of deviance is much broader . Merriam-webster, 2013: deviating [straying!!!] from an accepted norm. Some common characteristic that makes it deviant in an objective or person. Statistical rarity: not typical = deviant (not what you would see, popular outside of research, example: people who teach social control classes at uoit- C. ) rare, but not deviant: depending on percentage rarity can be subjective. Harm: physical, emotional, social and world views, problems: Temporal variance: not considered harmful 60 or 70 years ago but is considered harmful now. Societal reaction: predominantly negative = deviant, problems: Mine versus yours: how do we operationally define societal reaction? i. e. how. Normative violation: social norms, early deviant specialists- some behaviours/characteristics universally deviant, simplistic, more modern ds"s culturally specific. What norms are being violated by a student who plagarized by their term paper: to produce your own work, proper citation and not giving credit.
