Document Summary

Two separate glands: adenohypophysis (anterior pituitary gland, neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary gland) Connected to the hypothalamus integrator of endocrine and ans: infundibulum: stem-like stalks that connects to pituitary to the hypothalamus. Plays an important role in ensuring effects of ans hormones + coordinating endocrine/ans systems are doing opposite things to one another. Five functional types of secretory cells: *somatotrophs secrete gh, *lactotrophs secrete prolactin (prl, corticotroophs secrete acth, thyrotrophs secrete tsh, gonandotrophs secrete lh. Promotes growth of both and muscle/tissue (rate of cells due to building blocks for proteins: accelerates amino acid uptake. Stimulates fat metabolism: lipids mobilized from adipose cells, lipid catabolism increased. Shifts cell from glucose catabolism -> lipid catabolism: leads to increase blood glucose levels. Gh functions as an insulin antagonist (can"t control insulin: breaks down fats, as break down of lipids increase, break down of glucose decreases (more lipids break, more glucose left over) During pregnancy, prol promotes development of the breasts, anticipating milk secretion.
