Lecture 9
Many of us will suffer from a psychological disorder in our lifetime
Common myths
• Easily recognized as deviant
• Disorders are due to inheritance
• Incurable
• Weak willed
• Never contribute to society
• Always dangerous
Criteria
• 1. Deviant behaviour (going naked) in one culture may be considered normal, while in
others it may lead to arrest
• 2. Deviant behaviour must accompany distress
• 3. If a behaviour is dysfunctional it is clearly a disorder
Diagnosing
• DSM 5 Axes
o l: clinical disorders – symptoms that cause distress or impair social or
occupational functioning
o ll: personality disorders and mental retardation – chronic and enduring problems
that generally persist throughout life and impair interpersonal or occupational
functioning
o lll: general medical condition – physical disorders that may be relevant to
understanding or treating a psychological disorder
o lV: Psychosocial and environment problems – problems (such as interpersonal
stressors) that affect that diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis (expected
outcome) of disorder
o V: global assessment of functioning – individuals overall level of functioning in
social, occupational, and leisure activities
General treatment approaches
• Psychotherapy
o Involves psychological techniques derived from psychological perspectives
o Insight therapies vs. behavioural therapies
• Biomedical therapy (NOT ON EXAM)
o Involves treatments with medical procedures, such as medications
• Eclectic approach
o Approach to psychotherapy that uses techniques from various forms of therapy
