PSYC 1000U Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Psychosurgery, Confidence Trick, Reduced Affect Display
Document Summary
Week 9 notes chapters 15 & 16 psychological disorders and therapy. Why study disorders: many of us in our lifetime will suffer from, or know someone suffering from, a psychological disorder. If you or someone you know does, this course will provide a basic understanding of what is going on: certain careers (e. g. , police officer, nurse) are encountering individuals with disorders more and not receiving much training. Portrayals of psych disorders are frequent in movies and the news and this course will better assist you at determining fact from fiction. Common myths: easily recognized as deviant, disorder almost always due to inheritance. Incurable: never contribute to society, weak willed, always dangerous. Three criteria: deviance, maladaptive behaviours, personal distress. In the wodaabe tribe men wear costumes to attract women. In western society this would be considered abnormal. Mental disorders can arise in the interaction between nature and nurture caused by biology, thoughts, and the sociocultural environment.
