Nonreactive: content analysis, existing statistics, documents, secondary analysis. Helpful when a topic must be studied at a distance". Can reveal messages in a text that are difficult to see with casual observation. Coding converts symbolic meanings in the text into another form, usually numbers. Codes are then analyzed with statistics in the same way an experimenter or survey researcher would analyze his/her data. Coding system: set of instructions or rules on how to systematically observe and record content from text. Unit of analysis (things you can analyse: newspaper articles. Manifest: obvious content, higher reliability, lower validity. Latent: not obvious, unspoken message, higher validity, lower reliability. The list of all possible values that your codes may take (should be exhaustive!) Codes are then recorded on a recording sheet: one or more pages on which a researcher writes down systematically what has been coded from text in content analysis. Class excercise = sexual objectification of women in r&b + hip/hop music videos.
