SSCI 2900U Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Qualitative Property, Analytic Induction, Statistical Hypothesis Testing
Document Summary
Lecture 10, breaking down quantitative/qualitative divide, ssci research. While there are many differences between the two, both the research approaches have a great deal in common and can complement each other. Both approaches are required to gain knowledge about the social world. Positivism/naturalist: social scientists should use the same methods of inquiry that are used in the natural sciences. A deductive approach (hypothesis testing) can be used to acquire knowledge. Interpretivist: researchers should use inductive methods to try to grasp the subjective meanings of people"s actions. Objectivist: social phenomena have a reality independent of our perceptions. Constructionist ( hard"): what passes for reality is merely a set of mental constructions. / ( soft"): there is an objective social reality, but many of our ideas do not reflect it. Methods are not exclusive to one school. Combines both quantitative and qualitative (also referred to as mixed methods research)
