Leadership: the process of inspiring others to work hard to accomplish important tasks. Some challenges: shorter time frames for accomplishing things, expectations for success on the first attempt, complex, ambiguous, and multidimensional problems, taking a long-term view while meeting short-term demands. Power: the ability to get someone else to do something you want done or to make things happen the way you want. Power should be used to influence and control others for the common good rather seeking to exercise control for personal satisfaction. Power comes from 2 aspects- position and person: Position power (cid:271)ased o(cid:374) a (cid:373)a(cid:374)ager"s offi(cid:272)ial status in the organizatio(cid:374)"s hierar(cid:272)hy of authority. Personal power based on the unique personal qualities that a person brings to the leadership situation. Resources: reward power - capability to, expert power - capacity to offer something of value, coercive power - capability to punish or withhold positive outcomes, legitimate power - Vision: a clear sense of the future.
