ADM 2336 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Goal Setting, Ibm 7030 Stretch, Motivation
Document Summary
Motivation: a set of energetic forces that determine the direction, intensity and persistence of an employee"s work effort. People are motivated to act if they believe their actions will result in their desired goals. Motivational force = (e ->p) x ( total sum [(p->o) x v]) Example: outcome - getting an a in stats. We k(cid:374)ow rewards (cid:894)a(cid:374)d pu(cid:374)ish(cid:373)e(cid:374)t(cid:895) are i(cid:373)porta(cid:374)t i(cid:374) orga(cid:374)izatio(cid:374)s but perfor(cid:373)a(cid:374)ce we want to (dis)encourage isn"t always the performance we end up rewarding or punishing. What we want: employees who follow safety procedures. What we want: motivated students to come to class and perform well. What we want: candidates who tell the truth, offer clear specific ideas. Goals must be specific, and difficult but not impossible (stretch) Employees make a mental ledger of outcomes/inputs to others outcomes/inputs. Equity distress: tension as a result of inequity. Figure 6. 5 three possible outcomes of equity theory comparisons.
