Class 4 - theories on the development of. 5:20 pm: psychological theories (personal, individual is the focus): General systems theory: time determines level of cultural adaptation. How unrestricted the communication is in that society or is it restricted. When you are selecting your employees you have to go beyond your screening on technical skills. You need someone who has more unique, developed soft skills (interpersonal skills, intercultural sensitivity, initiative, empathy, family support, etc). Situational behavioural questions are a good way to measure those skills. Reading and watching won"t work unless you actually apply it. A few weeks or month-long assignment, you can just use an information-giving approach. Two months to a year: situational behavioural scenarios, case studies, more practical, time management, language course. Long term (1-5 years): more long-term training, field experiences, can go see the job site in person for a week or so, simulations, 100% sensitivity training, a lot of language training.
