Document Summary

Chapter 1. 3 different tissues of the human body. Histology: the study of tissues and cellular organization. Epithelial tissue: covers body surfaces, lines cavities and forms glands. They line cavities in our hearts and creates boundaries in different surfaces. Functions of epithelial: protection (as long its not lipid soluble it can protect chemicals, absorption (linings in the small intestines, filtration (kidneys, nephron, excretion (kidneys, secretion (glands, sensory reception (taste buds, olfactory membranes) The cellularity: it tends to be very cell dense. It has an apical surface (on the top) and a basal surface (on the bottom). You can change the apical and basal surfaces using cilia and micro villa. Basal lamina: non cellular adhesive sheets consists of glycoprotein secreted by epithelial cells. This sheet acts as a filter allowing specific molecules from diffusing from the connective tissue into the epithelial cells. Basal lamina 3rd it could create a barrier. Supported by connective tissue: epithelial sheets are supported by connective tissue.
