Endomysium: fine layer of ct that surrounds every muscle cell. Epimysium: dense, fibrous ct that surrounds and holds together a group of fascicles (outside layer of a single muscle) Deep fascia: still coarser layer of dense ct that binds muscles into functional groups eg: hamstrings vs quadriceps. Most are attached to bone in at least 2 places. A tendon: ban of fibrous ct attaching muscle to bone. An aponeurosis: sheet of fibrous tissue, takes place of tendon in sheetlike muscles that have a wide area of attachment. Four patterns: parallel: length of fascicles runs parallel to axis of bone, straplike: same thickness throughout length (like a strap). Sartorius: fusiform: thickness is not consistent (thicker in some areas). Biceps brachii: pennate: fascicles are short and attach obliquely to central tendon that runs the length of the muscle. Featherlike: unipennate: fascicles inserts into only one spot on the tendon. Ex. extensor digitorum longus: bipennate: fascicles insert into the tendon from opposite sides.
