Broad, flat, triangular muscle of the lower back. Prime mover of arm extension, arm adductor, rotates arm at shoulder. Thick muscle that forms the roundness of shoulder, common site of intramuscular injection. Prime mover of arm adduction (all fibres), lateral and medial rotation, flexion and extension (only some fibres) Superficial muscle of posterior thorax, flat and triangular shao. Anterior, flexes elbow joint and supinates forearm. Muscles of the forearm: movements of the wrist, hand and fingers. Adducts hand in concert with extensor carpi ulnaris. Flexes wrist and middle phalanges of fingers 2-5. Prime mover of finger extension, extends wrist, can abduct fingers. Flexes and laterally rotates thigh, weak knee flexor. All adduct, flex and medially rotate thigh. Extend leg and flexes thigh at hip. Prime mover of dorsiflexion, inverts the foot. Dorsiflexes foot, prime mover of toe extension. Especially during walking, also site of im injection. Plantar flexes foot when knee is extended.
