Document Summary
Deep within cerebral white matter - 3rd basic region of hemisp - group of subcortical nuclei called basal nuclei or basal ganglia. Each hemisphere"s basal nuclei include caudate nucleus, putamen & globus pallidus. Caudate arches over diencephalon; together w/ putamen it forms striatum. Putamen & globus pallidus: together form lens-shaped mass called lentiform nucleus which are separate. Associated w/ subthalamic nuclei & substantia nigra of midbrain. Receive input from entire cerebral cortex & other subcortical nuclei. Via relays through thalamus - output of nucleus of this projects to premotor & prefrontal cortices to influence muscle movements directed by primary motor cortex. Precise role(s) difficult to determine (some roles overlap with the cerebellum) Also play role in cognition & emotion; filter out incorrect or inappropriate responses getting to cortex. Starting, stopping, monitoring intensity of movements executed by cortex, especially if slow, sustained, stereotyped; also inhibit antagonistic and/or unnecessary actions.
