ANP 1106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Collagen, Tubercle, Joint Stability
Document Summary
Bones are joined by collagen ibers of connecive issue (no joint cavity) Sutures: seams, only between the bones of the skull, ariculaing edges interlock and juncions are illed with connecive issue ibers. Keeps bones together, but allows stretching during growth (fuses together during middle age) When fused together sutures become synostoses (movement of cranial bones would damage brain) Syndesmoses: bones are connected by ligaments (amount of movement depends on length of ligaments) Gomphoses: peg-in-socket ibrous joint, like in a tooth. Bones are joined by carilage (no joint cavity) Synchondroses: bar or plate of hyaline carilage unites bones at synchondrosis (epiphyseal plate) Symphyses: ibrocarilage unites bones, compressible and resilient (shock absorbing and limits movement) Hyaline is present in aricular carilages on the bony surfaces. Bones separated by luid-containing joint cavity, permits movement. General structure: six disinguishing features: aricular carilage- hyaline carilage overs opposing bone surfaces, cushions absorb compression placed on joint, keep them from being crushed.
