ANP 1106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Dural Venous Sinuses, Tentorium Cerebelli, Dura Mater
Document Summary
This system spans multiple brain structures through a network of neurons, which work together and span large distances, meaning they are not localized to specific regions of the brain: limbic system. The limbic system is a group of structures located on the medial aspect of each cerebral hemi- sphere and diencephalon. It includes parts of the diencephalon and some cerebral structures that encircle the brain stem. Amygdaloid body: recognizes angry or fearful facial expressions, assesses danger, and elicits fear response. Cingulate gyrus: role in expressing emotions via gestures, and resolves mental conflict. It often puts emotional responses to odours (ie. skunks smell bad) with most output relayed via the hypothalamus. The limbic system interacts with prefrontal lobes, resulting in an emotional reaction to things we consciously understand to be happening and are consciously aware of the emotional richness in our lives. The hippocampus and amygdaloid body play a role in this memory: reticular formation.
