Gives strength and sturdiness to the skin and helps water proof the skin. Not how many melanocytes but what type of melanin and how much. Cells are attached together by desmosomes after becoming dehydrated. Granulosum: getting too far from blood supply, plenty of granules, starting to deteriorate due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. Corneum: completely dead cells, important protective cells, cells filled with keratin. *know in order from most superficial to most deep. Stratum lucidum: just 2-3 layers of clear, flat keratinocytes.
