Document Summary

Topic 3 anatomy of the skeletal system: bony tissues. There is constant turn over of the material in bone. More important to maintain adequate levels of calcium in the blood than it is to maintain bone density so low calcium in diet can lead to low bone density. 3. 1: compare the structure of bony tissues and cartilages. Tough, but flexible (i) avascular, devoid of nerve fibers (ii) ground substance contains lots of the gags chondroitin sulfate & hyaluronic acid - also chondronectin (adhesive protein) Gags: large molecules that can hold a lot of water which is why cartilage is a well hydrated tissue (iii) collagen fibers (can have some elastic fibers) (iv) up to 80% h2o. Some terms relating to cartilage: perichondrium: connective tissue wrapping that goes around the cartilage. Their secretory activity forces them to surround themselves with secretory material and they cluster together.
