ANP 1106 Lecture 3: ANP 1106 topic 3B
Document Summary
2 sets of bones: cranial (houses the brain) + facial = 22 bones. Mandible is only bone that is moveable on the skull: cranium. Cranium can be divided into a vault and a base. Vault: forms superior, lateral and posterior aspects of the skull and forehead. Cranium surrounds and protects the brain and the organs responsible for hearing and balance. Internally, 3 bony ridges divide the cranial base into 3 distinct areas: anterior (highest) fossa, middle fossa and posterior (lowest) fossa: facial bones or face. Contain the cavities for the sensory organs of sight, smell, and taste. Provide openings for passage of air and food. Anchor the facial muscles that we use to show our feelings. The curvature of these bones allows them to be self-bracing. They can be strong while being quite thin: frontal bone. Also forms the roof of the orbits and anterior cranial fossa.
