Lecture 1: 14/09/2015: emergence of anthropology as a distinct discipline. Society: interdependent group of people who live in same region, can communicate and interact with one another. Social structure: how those societies are put together; relationships among groups within a society that bind it together. Micro/sub-cultures/popular culture (cultures of a sub-group of people, not a group any less important than another: functions of culture. Provide means for production and distribution of goods and services considered necessary for life. Provide for biological continuity the rules, ideals and behaviours regulating how we see sexual relationships and families (i. e. how sexual relationships should be maintained) Integrate new members (i. e. raising new children, and making sure they learn rules and values) Maintain order among members and between them and outsiders.
