Identity: how people define themselves; how others define them. Multiple, overlapping identities: people choose which identities to promote at various times in their live. Non-kin bases of identity are also important. Achieved or ascribed membership: you have to achieve or accomplish something or shown to be eligible for this group vs. you are born with given characteristics. Age group: the set group/category that stays the same which people move through. Age set: group of individuals who all move through the age grades (typically young men) Age categories formally named and recognized; crosscut society; basis of social organization: especially some pastoralist societies in africa. Individuals: move through grades as a group, similar to school, identify as cohorts of age sets . You will typically associate yourself with people for the rest of your life. Functions: aid transition from one life stage to another, after completion, these individuals go through certain training and attain knowledge, teach skills, provide economic assistance.
