Tournaments played by elite for purposes of military readiness. Games lacked specializaion and formal organizaion but local standards very important. Agrarian workers focused on the harvest, so there was litle ime for leisure. Leisure was allowed by the church, on church property. Besides sundays, about eight weeks in every year were free from work. Have peasants ready to serve at any ime they are needed, working land to maximum potenial. Middle ages feudalism was based on the exchange of land for military service. Lords were expected to provide trained soldiers to ight for the king. Sports in the middle ages were designed to: provide weapon pracice, increase a man"s itness and stamina. Perfecion of the body was achieved through allegiance and work.
