Montreal became the premier site for sports in canada in the 19th century. Growing emphasis on raionality and: on a river, central part of eastern organizaion in society & sports. During the last 3 decades of the 19th century, sport in canada matured and came under the inluence of men who sought to: raionalize (sought manager, budget, codify their games as they brought form. Snowshoeing, yacht club, etc. and order to sporing pursuits. In post-confederaion, sports were considered creaive and exciing, a way for canadians to express feelings of pride in their new naion. Canadians were at the forefront of the development and popularizaion of 3 sports: lacrosse (1867 est. The canadian baseball associaion was formed in 1876 and the irst baseball leagues shortly thereater: much of baseball"s early success occurred in southwestern ontario, where the proximity of the us was enhanced by railway links. Amateurism was a discriminatory (exclusionary) concept used to try to combat perceived evils of professionalism.
