Throughout early history of canada, sports and games were important in the creaion of individual and group ideniies. Individual idenity was one of a strong, northern character; robust and healthy. These two forms of entrepreneurialism came together to shape : ideas of how sports should be played and the image of sports in canada. Sports also created popular cultural messages about canada that were communicated naionally and abroad. Both organized and informal canadian sports events created public images of masculinity and strength. These images helped to deine the character of an unspoiled, northern, fronier canada. Canada, as part of the commonwealth, paricipated in the world"s fairs during second half of the 19th century. Early exhibits focused on canada as a sportmen"s paradise. Big game animals waiing to be hunted. Maple tree was the symbol of canada.
