In 788, prince abdel-rahman the umayyad built a mosque next to the river al-wadi al-kabir (guadalqavir). The mosque was the largest after jerusalem and mecca. When cordoba fell to the crusades in 1236, the grand mosque was made a cathedral. Spanish monarchy kept the arabic name la mezquita (al-masgida). Compared to the previous ages of arabic literature, news forms developed in andalus, with a unique and delicated edge to it, with a wealth of imagination and portrayals. Arab poets found in iberia beautiful nature, fertile lands, moderate weather, high impressive mountains and great rivers. Such wealth in natural endowments made the arabs feel deep attachment to andalus, which they made their homeland for 800 years. Starting in the 9th century, as learning progresses, arabic literacy movement in andalus moved to new horizons of creativity and genuine works.
