Jupiter, saturn, neptune, and uranus were all closer to the sun to begin with. As planets become bigger, their orbits become larger. Jupiter and saturn got themselves in a perfect orbital harmonic. As one went around the sun, the other went around twice. Combined together, they create a huge gravitational pull. Either the asteroids went into the sun, hit the moon, or were shot out of the orbital field. They scrubbed and cleaned up the solar system of the asteroids. This is why the asteroids that hit the moon are so old. If any asteroids come in, they have to pass jupiter and saturn.
