Document Summary

Lecture 15: chapter 5, evolution of populations continued. Adaptive value (fitness) of a genotype: corresponds to the contribution of an individual to the genetic pool of the next generation when compared with the contribution of other individuals. Ex; alleles: a1, a2 // 3 genotypes: a1a1, a1a2, a2a2: adaptive values for genotypes. A1a2 = 1. 0 (highest; heterozygous genotype has adaptive advantage; neither allele will disappear because both alleles are favoured in this genotype) If a genotype with only 1 type of allele has a higher adaptive value, that allele will become fixed in the population, and the other allele may disappear. Qualitative: discreet variation: colour, not measurable, but is observable. Quantitative: continuous variation: height, weight, often polygenic traits (trait that is under the influence of several genes; the combined effect of several genes will produce the trait) Polymorph: populations showing distinct morphological types or genetic variability.
