Document Summary
What separates living organisms from non-living mater (emergent characterisics): Display order: living organisms are arranged it in a highly ordered and sophisicated manner that allows them to be the way they are. Harness and uilize energy: life forms acquire energy and use it to maintain their highly ordered state. Reproduce: all living organisms reproduce regardless of the method, e. g. ( bacteria cells dividing, human mother giving birth). Respond to simuli: organisms can adjust their structure, funcion and behaviour to beter accommodate their surroundings, e. g. ( plant stomata (pores) size can be adjusted to regulate gas exchange) Exhibit homeostasis: living organisms are able to regulate their internal body temperature and keep it constant. (sweaing) Grow and develop: all organisms increase their size by increasing the size of and/or number of cells. Many organisms also develop over ime and change. Evolve: populaions of living organisms change over the course of generaions to beter it their surroundings.
