Note: one cell can alter the gene expression of another cell by sending a chemical messenger that will trigger a signal transduction cascade: chemical messenger is the signal transductor, but, cells do not send transcription factors themselves. Can be reached by: lipophilic ligands, or very small ligands that can diffuse through membrane. Ligand-receptor complex acts as a transcription factor: can bind to specific areas of dna, that are called response elements. Complex binds to gene promoter sequence that are ahead of the gene. Where regulatory machinery interacts with dna to regulate transcription of a specific gene. Genes must have a specific response element to bind to specific transcription factor. Have intracellular portion; this is where difference between the classes are important; they all do different things to carry out a response.
