Document Summary

Membrane permeability determines whether diffusion is simple or facilitated. Partial coefficient ratio of solubility in organic solvent to that in water. Molecule moves thru with diffusion gradient on its own. Relies on channel or carrier proteins to help. Theres a linear relationship between rate of movement and diffusion gradient. Relationship rate of movement increases as diffusion gradient increases but there is a max when it hits saturation kinetics when all transport proteins are occupied. You can inhibit the protein, prevents the protein to work = competitive inhibition (they are fighting to get that transport protein) only possible with facilitated diffusion. Judgment call based on partition coefficient (the ratio of solubility of the molecule in a nonpolar solvent to its solubility in water) More soluble in non polar are able to cross the membrane more readily. Ligand-gated: chemical messenger that binds causing it to open and close.
